Bearing down for autumn
With bears feeding heavily, it’s time to focus on the number one attractant, that being household garbage. Other than the obvious advice about not setting trash out the night before pickup, the two best defenses are a deep freeze and a bear resistant bin.
If you freeze anything that would otherwise be smelly, the bear will not go after it. The freezer needs to be indoors. Inside a garage is often not enough – if a human food conditioned bear has found success in garages before, the bear may attempt to break in even if it doesn’t smell anything, and a garage door is no match for a bear.
Bear resistant bins are an excellent choice for curbside pickup, especially if whatever is inside it is frozen. Note that these bins are bear RESISTANT, not bear proof. If they are used to store garbage, if given enough time a bear could open it.
