November

A female coho
At the fish fence, hatchery staff and volunteers will be capturing the last of our chum broodstock and will start taking coho broodstock later in the month. Once we have captured our broodstock, the fish fence is removed for the season (late November – early December).

Egg takes continue; early in the month the last chum egg takes occur, and later in the month we start with our coho egg takes as the females become ready to spawn. In early November, KEEPS runs our “Let the EGGcitement Begin” Open House, where you can observe, and have explained, the complete process for artificially spawning salmon.

The rearing ponds will have the previous year’s coho juveniles, and these can most easily be seen during feeding time (typically daily). As the waters cool, feeding will be cut back to every other day.
