Wildlife

Here is a list of wildlife that is known to be present or is potentially present based on habitat in the Albion area.  It was provided by MOELP staff in reference to comments on the Albion Land Use Guide Plan.

If you have additional sightings, please email us and we can add them to the list.

Terrestrial Wildlife Species List for the Albion Area

(Known or Potential)
Definitions: Red- and Blue-Listed Species

The Red List includes any species being considered for the more formal designation of either Extirpated, Endangered or Threatened. It also includes species already included within those categories. Extirpated species no longer exist in the wild in British Columbia, but occur elsewhere, Endangered species are facing imminent exptirpation or extinction. Threatened species are likely to become endangered if limiting factors are not reversed. Not all Red-listed species will necessarily become formally designated. Placing species on these lists flags them as being at risk and requiring investigation.

The Blue List includes any species considered to be vulnerable in British Columbia. Vulnerable species are of special concern because of characteristics that make their populations particularly sensitive to human activities or natural events. Blue-listed species are at a lower level of risk than Red-listed species.

Habitat Use (Birds)

Forest interior species are those that nest only within the interior of a forest and rarely occur at the edge.

Interior – Edge species are those that have territories located entirely within the forest but can also utilize forest edge or in some cases can extend a single territory across more than one forest fragment.

Edge species are those that typically use forest perimeters, nearby fields or large clearings within a forest during the breeding season.

Wetland species are those that breed in or around salt and freshwater wetland habitat.

Migratory Strategy (Birds)

Resident species are those that remain in the study area throughout the year with, at most, small scale movements.

Short Distance species are those that winter south of the study area but north of the tropics (Mexican border); also referred to as temperate migrants.

Neotropical species are those that winter south of the U.S.- Mexican border in the tropics of the “new world”(tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America).

Area Sensitivity (Forest Birds)

Area Sensitive species are those that increase in density as forest size increases

Insensitive species are those that are as likely to occur in small forests as large forests

Unknown species are those species that have not had sufficient research to determine area sensitivity.
