Dace and trout

Here we have two fish species you may encounter in Kanaka Creek near the Stewardship Center in the summer. The longnose dace is a small minnow that usually lives 3 to 4 years. They spawn in Kanaka Creek in late spring and early summer. You can find them foraging along the stream edge. One of their predators is the cutthroat trout. Upstream of Cliff Falls these are resident fish that never leave Kanaka Creek, and they remain relatively small (usually less than 20cm) due to the relatively low productivity of the stream compared to the ocean. Let’s take a look.
